Sudarshana Homam: A Powerful Havan for Protection and Removal of Evil
By Divine Center ·
Thinking of doing Sudarshana Homam? Know what this powerful Vishnu protection havan is, when families do it, what happens during the ritual, and what people commonly ask before booking.
What is Sudarshana Homam?
Sudarshana Homam is a Vedic fire ritual done to invoke Lord Sudarshana - the spinning disc or chakra of Lord Vishnu that represents divine power, protection, and the destruction of evil. The word Sudarshana means "auspicious vision" or "good sight" in Sanskrit.
This havan is one of the strongest protection rituals in the Vaishnava tradition. It is done when a family or individual is going through unexplained difficulties, repeated obstacles, health problems with no clear cause, or when there is a fear of evil eye, black magic, or negative energies affecting the household.
Lord Sudarshana is worshipped as a deity in his own right - not just as a weapon of Vishnu. He is believed to cut through all forms of negativity, clear obstacles, and restore order and peace to the person or home where the havan is performed.
When is Sudarshana Homam Done?
This is not a routine birthday or festival puja. Families come to Sudarshana Homam when something feels persistently wrong and other efforts have not brought relief.
When there is a fear of evil eye or drishti : If someone in the family - especially a young child or a person who has recently had good fortune - is suddenly unwell, irritable, or losing their good health without explanation, families often suspect evil eye and do this havan for protection and removal.
When black magic or negative energies are suspected : Sudarshana Homam is one of the go-to rituals when a family feels they are under the influence of black magic, a curse, or deliberate ill-wishing by someone. The havan is done to cut and remove those influences.
When a home or business is facing repeated problems : Continuous financial losses, repeated illness in the family, relationship troubles, or a business that keeps failing despite effort - families do this havan to remove whatever is blocking progress.
After moving into a new home : Some families do Sudarshana Homam as part of the Griha Pravesh or shortly after, to purify the space and establish divine protection in the new home.
For serious or unexplained illness : When a family member has a prolonged illness that is not responding to treatment, Sudarshana Homam is done alongside medical care as a spiritual intervention.
For legal and court-related troubles : When someone is facing an ongoing legal battle or a situation that feels stuck, families do this havan to seek divine intervention and removal of the obstacle.
What Happens During the Puja?
The pandit begins with Ganesh puja and Kalash sthapana. A Sudarshana Yantra - a geometric sacred diagram representing Lord Sudarshana - is placed at the center of the puja space and worshipped before the havan begins.
The havan kund is set up and lit. The pandit then chants the Sudarshana Ashtakam - an eight-verse hymn specifically composed in praise of Lord Sudarshana - along with the Sudarshana Mantra and other Vishnu mantras. Offerings of ghee, sesame seeds, lotus flowers, tulsi, and specific herbs are made into the fire with each repetition of the mantra.
The number of mantra chants varies - typically 108 or 1008 repetitions depending on the situation the puja is being done for. After the havan, a Vishnu abhishekam may be performed. The ritual closes with aarti and distribution of prasad.
The full puja takes 3 to 4 hours. The family members should be present throughout, and the person the puja is being done for should sit near the havan kund for at least the main portion of the ritual.
Questions Families Commonly Ask
Q) How is Sudarshana Homam different from other protection pujas?
There are several protection pujas in the Hindu tradition - Maha Mrityunjaya Homam, Hanuman Puja, Navagraha Homam - and each has a different focus. Sudarshana Homam is specifically aimed at cutting and removing negative external influences - evil eye, black magic, curses, and deliberate ill-wishing. If the problem feels like it is coming from outside - from someone else's envy or intent - Sudarshana Homam is the one most pandits recommend.
Q) Can it be done for a child who is suffering from evil eye?
Yes. This is one of the most common reasons families do Sudarshana Homam. When a young child is affected by drishti or evil eye, the havan is done with the child's name in the sankalpa and the child present near the puja space. The ritual is considered very effective for children.
Q) How many pandits are needed?
For 108 mantra repetitions, one experienced pandit is enough. For 1008 repetitions, two pandits working together is recommended for better rhythm and completion. Your pandit will advise based on the situation.
Q) Can the puja be done if the affected person cannot attend?
Yes. The havan can be done on behalf of someone who is not present - in a hospital, in another city, or unable to come home. The person's name and gotra are stated in the sankalpa at the start of the puja and the ritual reaches them.
Q) What is the Sudarshana Ashtakam?
It is an eight-verse hymn composed by the Vaishnava saint Vedanta Desika specifically in praise of Lord Sudarshana. It describes Sudarshana's power to destroy evil and protect devotees. Reciting the Sudarshana Ashtakam is the central practice of this havan - the pandit chants it repeatedly as offerings are made into the fire.
Q) Is there a best day to do this havan?
Ekadashi - the 11th day of each lunar fortnight - is considered very auspicious for Vishnu-related rituals including Sudarshana Homam. Saturdays are also commonly chosen. In urgent situations, the pandit will select the next available auspicious muhurta rather than wait for a specific day.
Q) How often should it be done?
Once is usually sufficient for a specific situation. If the family feels the problem has not fully resolved, a second havan can be done. Some families do Sudarshana Homam annually as a protective practice for the household.
